What do you want to do with your life? No, really. What do you want to do with YOUR life? I can bet that it doesn’t involve working for a chain restaurant, at a retail giant, or being a mop for somebody else. I am talking about doing things that matter for you. If this is training dolphins at a zoo for peoples enjoyment, great. If it means traveling the world to dig up prehistoric bones, cool. Maybe for you it is running a business, flying planes, building old cars, anything. How many of us still follow our dreams? This country was created by people with strong dreams. People that were so fed up that they took off across the ocean to carve out a new world for themselves and their families. How many “mom and pop” stores have disappeared from our locations to be replaced by chain gangs. This is an unfortunate part of our current system. In this age of technology, savvy investors, and computers, it is almost impossible for the average person to compete with the giants. However, I believe that this trend is slowly beginning to change. People are wanting “unique” things. They are willing to go to restaurants that are not so tailor fit. People’s lives have become mundane. We always know what we are going to get and everything just seems a little too…. cookie cutter? There seems to be a revival in small business in this country. People are leaving their cozy jobs that hold no meaning for them and moving to start a new venture on their own. Is it scary? Of course it is. That is why I think a lot of people don’t choose this path. It means that WE are in control of our company and our future. We can’t just look up the chain of command for support and what we are supposed to do. We need to create our own creative solutions to problems. I think a lot of this has to do with our ever-increasing level of complacence and passing our responsibility over to someone else. This is another topic all together, but the main thing here is to target what you want to do for yourself. Now I’m not suggesting you quit your job at Mcdonalds or Target, but to start exploring other passions and interests outside of your daily grind. Stop wasting time with TV, video games, and going out to eat every night. Pick up some new hobbies. Learn to hunt, play the drums, pick up a sport, travel. Read a good book on something new. There are many good books out on business startups, magazines on entrepreneurship, and more. Our lives are too preset today and we are used to divvying out control to things outside of ourselves. This is a very unhealthy trend as it ultimately lets others decide where our lives will end up. So take back that power for yourself and start looking at your life as an empty slate. YOU figure out where you want to live, who you want to be with, and what you want to do. Create this for yourself. And don’t let people tell you what you can or can’t do.
I will leave you with an old chinese proverb.
“The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.”
