Is Pre-made Vegetarian food REALLY Healthy?

2008-02-18 - Boca Burgers - 0012

How did we fall into this trap?

This is what is in a “Boca Burger.”  Straight from the companies website.

Ingredients: WATER, SOY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, WHEAT GLUTEN, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF METHYLCELLULOSE, SALT, CARAMEL COLOR, DRIED ONIONS, YEAST EXTRACT, SESAME OIL, HYDROLYZED WHEAT PROTEIN, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR (NON-MEAT), DISODIUM GUANYLATE, DISODIUM INOSINATE. CONTAINS: SOY, WHEAT, SESAME.

Does that look healthy to you?  Now this is not some rant to “dismiss” vegetarian or veganism.  If you feel best without eating too many animal products for a while; that’s fine.  I just feel like there is still a stigma that eating this way means that it is ok to go out and eat a bunch of products laced with tons of sugar, chemicals, processed grains, gluten, and soy.  Is this really what we are to be eating?  The way I see it, these products are STILL processed, packaged junk.  Things in this category could include pretzels, cereals, crackers, desserts, granolas, “faux meats,” candy, “vegan proteins,” soy milk, etc.  Marketers are very savvy.  They understand people are trying to be healthy.  There is still enough stuff out (for now) about low-fat diets and animal-free diets that get people lured into buying this stuff.  I have no agenda against “Boca Burger” or any other company out there.  I just believe that we shouldn’t be fooling ourselves.  Let’s switch off of the processed stuff and get back to the real food.  The fruits and vegetables.  The healthy fats.  The healthy proteins.  It’s time to ditch the sugar and processed stuff.  What is your favorite “fake food?”
