Real World Fitness

English: Exercising outdoors is healthier than...

Going into stuffy gyms and sitting on cardio machines all day.  Maybe doing 2 or 3 weightlifting exercises.  We take our cellphones.  How did we end up this way?  When did we get away from the real world stuff?  Well I think there is something BETTER about real-world exercise and I will tell you why.  First of all, what is real world exercise?

Real world exercise is exactly how it sounds.  It is exercising out in the world instead of indoors doing the same thing every day.  Grab a friend and go on a long bike ride.  Chop some wood for a bonfire.  Plan a garden or help grow something.  Take a paddle boat or kayak around a lake.  Playing frisbee with a buddy.  The options are really endless.  Anything that deals with working or playing outside in the fresh air count.  Plan your life around this stuff.  It seems that most of us just meet up with friends at places like restaurants or bars these days.  Why do we do this?  Maybe it’s the lack of time or energy or both.  But what about on days off?  Let’s go on a big walk.  Let’s find a new outdoor hobby.  There are so many things to do OUTSIDE.  I don’t think I will ever own a gym membership again unless it is for the sauna.  Let’s figure out a way to add these things into our routines.  Get a PUSH mower.  Clean the house.  Whatever it is.  This is definitely not an exhaustive list.  The point here is being creative, different, and having fun at the same time.  It feels GOOD to do physical activities that are different.  When was the last time you chopped wood?  Or paddled down a river?  It’s exhilarating.  Plan a hike and take a picnic lunch to eat with someone special.  I could go on and on and I know this is a bit “rant-like,” but the main thing is that exercising in nature is healthy.  It allows us to really let out the steam and breathe.  It allows us to disconnect from our busy worlds for just a little bit of time and enjoy life for the MOMENT.  These are the things worth living for =)  What is your favorite non-gym fitness activity?
