Ok, so technically I could have thrown this in with the food section but I think the underlying principles are different enough that this warrants its own little segment. How does nutrition help ground us?
So many times you look around and you will see people attempting to ground themselves out with food. We use heavy junk food with very little nutritional value instead of real food usually. What is the problem there? We live high-paced, high-stress lives that quickly deplete our nutritional reserves. We don’t usually replace them. So we end up with a deficit. When your body is starving for things that it crucially needs it starts getting antsy. So what do we do about this? We ADD back in the missing minerals and vitamins, antioxidants, enzymes, and other unknowns that help our body to get back on track. It’s like having a ton of junk wood to build a house and no building materials. The vitamins and minerals are your nails, your saws, your hammers, your drills. Enzymes are your workers. So what is the easiest way to add back in these things so that your body can jump into action? The best way is to eat a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, some animal foods, and some good fats. The idea here is quality over quantity. A little can go a long way on an extended basis. But how about some specifics Joe? Sure, why not. I can’t promise you will like them all =)
LIVER: Everyone’s favorite I know. But seriously, liver is a superstar. It has massive amounts of most B vitamins with a tremendous amount of vitamin B12. B12 is getting a lot of attention lately as most people don’t get enough through their diet. A small serving of liver twice a week will skyrocket your intake.
COD LIVER OIL: Get the good stuff. Raw, perhaps fermented, etc. Vitamin A and D, Omega 3’s, etc.
FERMENTED FOODS: Natures probiotic. Extremely rich in enzymes that help break down your food. Can be eaten with meals (especially meats) to help with digestion. I wouldn’t get lured into buying some fancy probiotic supplement from companies. People have been eating fermented foods for thousands of years. Things like sauerkraut, pickled garlic, pickled turnips, maybe some raw olives in brine, kefir, etc. There are so many to choose from. Keep in mind that these products must be RAW. Buying dead sauerkraut from the supermarket will not have these active benefits.
JUICING: Great way to get in massive amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, etc.
RAW FATS: These are the fats we evolved eating primarily. Things like olives/olive oil, coconuts/oil, raw butter, avocados, egg yolks, bone marrow, assorted nuts, etc. It’s amazing the difference between these and fried foods. Some animal fat can be good but be careful with the cooking processes.
So let’s get on the nutrition boat and help our bodies ground out a bit more. It is amazing the sense of calm that comes when the body has everything it needs. Even if your health is not where you want it to be your body will be sending you a thousand thank-you’s for the increased level of nutrition coming in.
