Herbs from the garden

Quick one today guys.  Big storm came through last night  =)  So herbs eh?  What is the deal?

Herbs to me are God’s medicine.  These are various plants, weeds, barks, etc that have been used medicinally for a very long time.  These are plants that can’t really be classified as FOOD yet are edible and have far-reaching purposes in the human body.  Classification of herbs gets hazy sometimes.  I would say some of the more basic household herbs would include garlic, basil, thyme, parsley, cilantro, oregano, rosemary, and ginger.  Now to clarify, I am not talking about the dried, aged stuff in bottles that may or may not be 3 years old.  I am primarily talking about fresh or recently dried and properly sealed herbs.  Things that still retain their “living potencies.”  Herbs can be used for most maladies in the body.  Let’s look at some of the common ailments they can be used for.

CONSTIPATION:  This is huge in America.  I literally laugh whenever I go into the supermarkets and see giant boxes of “smooth move” teas, laxatives, and “bowel-aids” across shelves.  Add this to the endless commercials about constipation, bloating, acid reflux, etc.  Our country is STUCK (in more ways than one) =)  There are certain herbal formulas that greatly aid this problem.  Ultimately, a healthy lifestyle is the best choice but these can help get things moving in a stuck system.  Constipation cannot truly be talked about without talking about digestion.

DIGESTION:  Linked to constipation.  Probably the cause of most constipation.  Most animals have no problem going to the bathroom.  They don’t strain on toilets.  They don’t think about it.  They just go.  So following the problem to the root we end up with digestion.  People are not digesting their food properly.  Some of the worst FOOD offenders are: fried foods, sugars, pasteurized dairy products, roasted nuts, vegetable oils, cereals, gluten, etc.  Keep in mind it is not only the food that is the problem here.  It is HOW we eat.  Eating in rush-hour traffic or at a high-stress business meeting is not a good way to digest your food.  Neither is wolfing down our food.  Eating whole, easily digestible foods in a calm manner while chewing properly is amazing for digestion.  Once again, God has provided us with some herbs that help aid this process.

LIVER/KIDNEYS:  Detox organs.  These often get gunked up during the process of life here as well.  The worst offenders?  FOOD and STRESS.  Junk foods, high-paced lifestyles, unresolved mental/emotional conflicts, you name it.  Over time, these organs get jammed up.  They are basically highly advanced filters that perform amazing functions in our bodies.  Luckily, there are herbs that help us get these organs rolling again as well.

STRESS:  Ultimately, this is our problem to deal with.  However, there are definitely things we can do to help out.  Herbs can help calm us down, revive us, help us sleep, release emotional pains and conflicts, etc.

These are the basics.  There are probably endless ways of using herbs.  One of which is essential oils and flower essences, which will be an upcoming post.  Let’s ditch the “seasonings” disguised as herbs and start using the real thing more.  Keep in mind that some herbs are mildly toxic and should not necessarily be used on a permanent basis.  Happy hunting =)
