Island of Lower Saranac Lake, Adirondack Mount...

A lot of us grow up thinking that we need to be independent.  We need to do things for ourselves.  We shouldn’t rely on anybody else.  We shouldn’t be team players.  Why?  Maybe we would have to rely on people.  Maybe we would have to trust people.  Some of us learned not to trust as young children.  Some of us learned it through bad relationships.  Maybe we had a serious problem with God.  Maybe we lost trust or faith in people.  Hopefully it was only some people.  Sometimes it is all people.  Maybe we were so wounded deep down that we closed down to everything except ourselves.  WHAT A TERRIBLE WAY TO LIVE!  What does this do in our lives?  It turns us into an island.  An island with no connections to the outside world.  We TRY not to rely on others for anything at all.  In fact, we don’t just not rely on others, but we put up trade embargo’s at our borders.  We have fences with posted guards.  We have patrol ships.  The problem?  A lot of times, there is a lot of LOVE and help and connection that gets shut out as well.  The crazy thing about this mentality?  NONE of us are really islands.  We can create this mentality in our mind as a defense mechanism all we want.  We can TRY extremely hard to be an island.  But we never truly are.  We always rely on the system we live in.  How can we not?  At the very least, we rely on GOD and the UNIVERSE for a lot of things.  Food, air, water, sunlight, etc.  We can try to shut these things out as well and act like we don’t need GOD.  But isn’t that a crazy idea?  Ultimately, TRYING TO BE AN ISLAND IS TO REJECT BEING HUMAN.  For whatever reason, we are here.  We are here with others.  We are here interconnected with the rest of the world.  We are not alone.  We don’t have to be alone.  We can share the beauty of this world with others.  Are there people out there who will hurt us?  Probably.  Will we suffer by being human?  Sure.  There is suffering for all of us.  But closing up to everything and everyone is not the answer.  REAL MEN realize that we are not islands.  Everyone is stronger as part of a team.  Everyone is more stable and safe.  Hint hint America =)  Let’s swallow our fear and our pride and evolve into more team players for the good of ourselves, our families and friends, and the planet.

‘No Man is an Island’

No man is an island entire of itself; every man

is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;

if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe

is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as

well as any manner of thy friends or of thine

own were; any man’s death diminishes me,

because I am involved in mankind.

And therefore never send to know for whom

the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

John Donne
